Minor dental imperfections can have an impact on your confidence. Whether you are dealing with chipped edges, small gaps or persistent discolouration, these details can make you feel hesitant to smile freely. Composite bonding offers a sophisticated and high-impact solution to these common issues whilst being a popular, simple and affordable treatment which can be completed in one appointment.

Unlike invasive procedures, composite bonding preserves your natural enamel by sculpting a bespoke resin onto the tooth and provides a seamless, aesthetic refinement that looks and feels completely natural.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment designed to fix chips and cracks in your teeth, discolouration and staining. A quick, painless procedure, composite bonding can also be used for minor lengthening, and to reduce gaps between teeth for a seamless and natural-looking smile. You may also have heard the procedure referred to as ‘composite veneers’.

At Hilltop Dental, we are experts in providing composite bonding, an easy, affordable treatment with reliable results. With regular care, bonding usually lasts from 5 to 7 years; if damaged, your composites can be repaired or replaced as required.

Why choose composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a non-invasive, painless dental treatment which can achieve a beautiful, balanced smile and usually only needs one appointment.

Unlike other treatments for chipped, misshapen or discoloured teeth, such as porcelain veneers, no enamel is taken from the tooth and the procedure is completely reversible, so your composites can be easily removed or replaced.

The process also tends to be more affordable than other cosmetic dental treatments.

Composite bonding can help with:

  • Small chips and cracks
  • Small gaps in between teeth
  • Discolouration or staining
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Lengthening teeth

The composite bonding process

Our expertly trained dentists are highly experienced in composite bonding and other aspects of cosmetic dentistry. We use the latest techniques to ensure a smooth, natural finish which will enhance your smile for years to come.

1.Consultation

We will examine your teeth, then discuss your treatment with you, including your goals and any concerns you may have. If you choose to go ahead with composite bonding, we will use digital imaging to show you what your composites will look like once they have been placed. If you choose to go ahead you will get the opportunity to choose a colour that matches your teeth.

2. Applying the composite resins

Your dentist will lightly roughen the surface of the teeth to be treated, then apply a tooth-coloured resin, similar to the material used in white fillings, to the outer surface of your tooth. The resin is then applied to the tooth and bonded to the surface.

3. Hardening and polishing

After this, your composites will be hardened under a special curing light, then polished to match your surrounding teeth.

4. Aftercare

Our dental team will let you know how to care for your composites. We recommend not biting on hard objects such as pens, and avoiding coffee, red wine and tea for the first 48 hours after your composites have been fitted, as these can cause staining.

FAQs

Does composite bonding whiten teeth?

Composite bonding does not whiten your natural teeth, but it does improve their appearance by covering stains and discolouration. If you wish to have teeth whitening treatment, it is important to have this before you get your composites, as they cannot be whitened.

Is composite bonding painful?

As composite bonding is a non-invasive procedure and does not involve drilling, it is not painful, although you may experience some minor sensitivity after your composite bonding has been placed.

How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding usually lasts from 5 to 7 years. You can ensure it lasts longer by going for regular checkups, and maintaining your oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing your teeth. We also recommend avoiding tobacco products, fizzy and sugary drinks, as well as habits such as biting your nails or chewing hard objects.

Is composite bonding reversible?

Yes – as no enamel is removed, it is straightforward to remove composite bonding.

Will it look unnatural?

No, as we use the latest techniques to sculpt the composite resins to fit your tooth. Our dentists will also match the composite shade to your tooth colour.

What are the alternatives to composite bonding in Birmingham?

Besides composite bonding, we also offer porcelain veneers, which are more durable (up to 10 or 15 years). However, veneers are more expensive, and usually require a small amount of enamel to be removed. If you wish to straighten or fix minor gaps between your teeth, we also offer Invisalign.
